Dan Best, grandson of Caterpillar co-founder C.L. Best, is hosting the show at his family ranch north of Woodland. The Caterpillar Corporation came about in 1925 with the combining of two California tractor companies : C. L. Best Gas Traction Company of San Leandro, and Holt Manufacturing Company of Stockton, and Peoria. This show will celebrate over a century of tractor history and innovation, much of which took place in the Central Valley of California. In the early days, creative modifications were made on a farm by farm basis, as well as testing and development at the UC Davis Ag school. Avid collectors and innovative farmers such as Fred and Joe Heidrick Senior, Earl Wallace, amassed collections of unique machines, many of which will be available to view at the show or in the Heidrick Ag History Center.
The current generation of collectors such as Don Hunter, Doug Veerkamp, Tom Madden, Jess Gilbertson, George (Willie) Dulinsky, George Rankin, and Allan Harris will be bringing their fine machines. Of particular note, will be the first showing of a full scale reproduction of a 1906 Holt Steam Crawler, produced by Don Hunter. Tom Madden will be bringing his prototype number one Best 60, built in 1919. We are expecting a fine showing of John Deere, Ford, Farmall, Rumley, Avery, Case, and Allis Chalmers tractors from all decades, and there will even be an Australian Chamberlain to add an international flavour.
